Many genealogists and family historians work on their own and it feels like there is nobody to discuss things with. Very few of us have had any training in ethics before, we may feel confused as to what to do if a difficult or awkward situation arises. Finding an acceptable outcome when presented with an ethical dilemma can feel like an insurmountable problem. Self-administered DNA tests have opened up a new world of relatively quickly discovering other people’s secrets and lies to many genealogists. This workshop, based on the ‘‘Ethical dilemmas in genealogy’’ presentation, can be taken as a stand-alone workshop. We will look at an ethical decision making model, and walk through a checklist of solutions to decision making. The larger group will then divide into smaller groups to discuss a number of ethical dilemma scenarios. At the end of the workshop, participants will feed back on their outcomes and the process of decision making during the discussions. Attendees will benefit from considering ethical issues with empathy, sensitivity and diplomacy.
