This workshop will take you through the practical steps you need to take to set up a surname project, get the ball rolling, and keep it rolling. There are lots of shortcuts and "quick wins" that will help you get people into your project. Two major topics will be explored in depth: 1) the criteria for grouping people into specific subgroups within the project; and 2) analysing the resultant subgroups … what can we say about any particular subgroup in terms of their origins, how long they have carried the surname, and their link to surname distribution maps, surname dictionaries, and ancient texts?
